BAYTOWN, Texas — Top Fuel points leader Steve Torrence made the quickest run in both qualifying sessions Saturday, powering to the No. 1 spot in the Mopar Express Lane NHRA SpringNationals at Houston Raceway Park.

Coming off a victory last week at Texas Motorplex outside Dallas, the Texan had a 3.672-second run at 327.98 mph for his second straight No. 1 qualifier and 27th overall.

« Today was a huge success and the car ran really well, » Torrence said. « It gives us a lot of confidence going into tomorrow and that puts a little pressure on the competition. We’ll go out and do the best we can, and we just need to maintain that consistency. »

Jack Beckman took the top spot in Funny Car, Alex Laughlin was the fastest in Pro Stock and Matt Smith led the Pro Stock Motorcycle field in the 10th of 11 events in the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season.

Beckman had a 3.884 at 328.14 in a Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat, Laughlin ran a 6.506 at 210.73 in a Chevrolet Camaro, and Smith broke both ends of the track record with a 6.729 at 199.88 on an EBR.
